Cairn — Privacy Policy
Last updated 28 August 2026
Overview
Cairn is designed to collect as little as possible. This page explains what the app stores and what it doesn’t.
What Cairn stores
The three things you write each night, and the date they’re attached to. That’s it — there’s no account, no profile, and no other personal information collected by the app.
Where it’s stored
Entries are stored locally on your device. If you have iCloud backup enabled on your device, entries are included in that backup so they can be restored if you reinstall Cairn or switch devices. Northlight does not have a server, and does not receive or store copies of your entries.
In-app purchase
Cairn offers a one-time unlock for voice entry, archive search, export, and the home screen widget. This purchase is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store; Northlight does not receive or store any payment information.
Voice entry
If you use voice entry, audio is processed using Apple’s on-device or system speech recognition to convert it to text. Audio is not stored or transmitted by Cairn after transcription.
Analytics and tracking
Cairn does not use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind. Nothing about your use of the app is sent to Northlight or any other party.
Children’s privacy
Cairn is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from children.
